NASSAU, Bah.
During the holiday season Master Technicians Ltd. selected the Farm Road Community Band and the Bahamas Youth Alive Band to each receive a $500 cash donation to purchase much needed instruments for the bands. The band visited the retail store andperformed professionally arranged Christmas carols in the parking lot for customers and passing drivers in the high traffic Village Road area.
The Bahamas Youth Alive Band provided entertainment on Friday December 19, 2008. The band was formed in March 2008 as a second programme at the Kemp Road Community Band center. “Children throughout Nassau are invited to join the band’s programme which is open to those who want to learn to play and read music.” Said Ms. Ruby Ann Saunders, President and founder of the band. “We continually ask them that they become great musicians and uphold our motto of ‘Moving characters, shaping lives, rising to God’s standard through the world of music’.”
Along with the band programme the members are learning to become entrepreneurs through the sale of cookies throughout Nassau. On many occasions drivers are able to purchase cookies for $1 in the Paradise Island Bridge area from band members. Many of the children are already proving themselves in the band by diligently practicing and making the Honor Roll at their schools.
The Farm Road Community Band played on December 22, 2008. The band programme was recently relaunched in September when they purchased new instruments on their own accord. There are currently 100 people in the Farm Road Community Band, however, the programme is in need of instruments to provide for all the band mates. The children and young adults in the programme range from ages 6 to 20+.
“The band members are extremely dedicated to their programme” said Ms. Charlene Milfort, Band Director. “I have found that children are lacking attention in the home in our society and they really enjoy coming to the programme to receive that much-needed attention.” The band programme has been successful in providing Bahamian young men a positive outlet for socialization instead of staying idle and becoming involved in negative or illegal activities.
Along with band practice the members must come to a one hour afternoon homework help program four days a week. The center also runs Women of Essence, a women’s education programme and a once per month Senior Citizens programme. In the near future they are planning to incorporate the Governor General’s Youth Award as another available activity.
Both bands are petitioning to the public for monetary support to purchase the much-needed instruments that are a necessity to keep their programme running. Also, they are available to play at local events and businesses.
