LCD vs. Plasma HDTVs

Are you in the market for a new television? Chances are you may be a bit confused as to which type of television to purchase. Here are a few details to keep in mind when looking for the right television to suit your lifestyle.

Contrast

Contrast consists of the white and black levels of a television. Plasma televisions give a better contrast ratio than LCD televisions. However, LCDs have caught up over the past few years.

Viewing angles

Depending on where your television is in a room, you may want to consider whether or not viewers
will be watching from various angles. In wider areas you should consider a plasma television, because
the quality of the picture stays the same no matter what angle you are viewing at. With LCDs when
viewing from a wider angle, colours begin to look less saturated.

On screen motion

When it comes to motion graphics, plasma has always delivered a crisp and clear picture. LCDs have
struggled a bit with motion in the early years, sometimes giving a slight blurring effect when showing
rapid on screen movements. However most if not all motion blur has been eliminated from modern
LCD televisions giving a look that is almost just as crisp and clear as a plasma display.

Lighting conditions

In normal to low room lighting conditions plasma televisions have a better picture quality. In bright lit
rooms LCDs are more much preferred. This means that LCDs are generally better for public displays,
due to the bright environment.

Burn-in

Burn-in is what happens when a static image is left on the screen for prolonged periods of time. The
outline of the picture becomes embedded in the screen causing a ghost like image of the picture to
remain on the screen. Plasma televisions have had a problem with burn-in earlier in its development
and even though it still remains an issue it is not as much of a problem as it was in the past. LCDs have absolutely no problem with burn-in whatsoever, no matter how long a static image remains on the screen. This makes LCD televisions better for people who usually pause the television when busy with other things or who use it for playing video games.

Power consumption

If power is a priority for you then the LCD is your best bet. LCDs usually burn less electricity than
plasma televisions of the same size. No matter what type of television you are interested in purchasing, it is always best to judge the picture quality for yourself before purchasing.
